The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings and research notes gathered by author David Kenyon Webster while conduction research for a book entitled, Myth and Maneater: The Story of the Shark. A final typescript of the book is included in the collection. It was published in England by Peter Davies in 1962 and by Norton in the United States the following year. Correspondence is dated 1955-1961 and includes letters received by Webster from marine biologists, museums, libraries and individuals interested in sharks, shark attacks, shark fishing and shark folklore in South Africa, Cuba, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaya, Norway, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The collection includes 62 photographs including images of sharks, shark fishing and victims of shark attack collected by Webster in the course of his research. The photographs include several photographs of Webster. The newspaper clippings are dated 1955-1961 and largely concern shark attacks in the United States. The collection also includes bibliographic citations and reprints of publications concerning sharks.
